Dato Keramat Station
1. Ikan Bakar @ Mat Teh Ikan Bakar Dato Keramat

If you’re one of those people who can’t go a day without having rice, then Mat Teh Ikan Bakar is definitely a place that you would want to keep a look out for. This ‘warung-style’ family eatery is famous for serving up superbly fresh grilled fish as well as other Malay staples such as fish assam pedas (sour and spicy fish), ulam (a type of traditional salad), chicken feet soup and fish curry .

Not only is the food served here delicious (some might even go as far to call it addictive!), but you can also get a real bang for your buck as the prices of each dish is relatively cheap!

2. R.A Nasi Lemak

If there’s one dish that Malaysians are crazy about, it’s Nasi Lemak (steamed coconut rice) . Despite being nothing more than a humble hawker stall, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that R.A Nasi Lemak is one of the capitals most established Nasi Lemak joints. Based in Kampung Baru, it’s located close to the entrance of the Dang Wangi LRT station and is often times quite packed.

The main attraction of this quaint, self-service style stall has definitely got to be its classic Nasi Lemak with spicy sambal. But, if you’re not too big of a fan of plain sambal or if you just want to try switching it up a little, there are also several alternative side dishes that you choose from; such as sambal sotong (squid), flavourful chicken rendang or perfectly seasoned ‘paru goreng’ (fried lungs). All of which are incredibly tasty !

3. Asyiq’s Mee Rebus/Asyiq Dang Wangi
Up next is another little stall that proves that looks can be deceiving. Located in the back lane of Jalan Dang Wangi, (near the famous Yut Kee coffee shop) Asyiq’s Mee Rebus is pretty easy to miss . One of the oldest hawker stalls in near the Dang Wangi LRT station, this deceivingly small stall is actually locally famous for their flavour-packed ‘mee rebus’ (literally translated to ‘boiled noodle dish’ from Malay) and their fantastic rojak Mamak 🤩.

One of the must try dishes includes the ‘Mee Rebus Sotong’ which features spicy and tender squid, with halved hard-boiled eggs, tofu and potato cubes, bean sprouts, fried shallots and sliced green chilli. Paired with a tall glass of ‘teh tarik’ (pulled tea), you’ll be craving for second servings !

4. Peranakan Place @ Nu Sentral

Fancy a bit of Nyonya style cuisine? Then look no further. Located on the highest floor in Nu Sentral, Peranakan Place stands out with its loud and colourful exterior that features dip-dyed glass and antique porcelain stools. The interior of the restaurant equally vibrant with gorgeous, batik-covered walls and dazzling chandeliers that somehow gives the whole place a rather homey feel as opposed to being ostentatious .

As for the dishes, the ‘itik tim’ (seasoned duck in broth with tomato chunks and onion), pandan wrapped grilled chicken, Peranakan styled steamed fish and a pot of ‘gaharu’ tea comes very highly recommended .

A real gem off the beaten track, ABC Bistro serves an affordable medley of Indian, Chinese and Malay food along with a few choice handfuls of western options. The Chicken biryani and Mutton Varuval curry comes highly recommended although (fair warning) they can be a tad spicy ️.

If you’re after more ‘breakfast-type’ foods like ‘roti canai’ or ‘tosai’, be sure to arrive before 11 am (as they stop serving those particular dishes after that time period). The ‘roti canai banjir’ is absolutely amazing, and pair that up with some good ol’ ‘Teh Tarik’? Sheer bliss !

Formerly known as Dr. Inc (pronounced ‘Drink’), Lisette’s Café and Bakery is nestled within the residential area of Bangsar and is just a quick 5 min walk from the Bangsar LRT station. With its rustic style décor and a multitude of potted plants decorating the area, the café possesses an earthy charm to it that’s hard not to admire .

For the most part, Lisette’s is a great brunch place. Dedicated to clean eating, the cafe serves a vegan brunch buffet every Tuesdays and Fridays, while regular brunch is served on Sundays. Besides that, the café also serves some amazing coffee and delicious, freshly baked goods on the daily .

Located in a small corner of Chinatown, Leaf & Co Cafe is the in-house cafe of Mingle Hostel; a popular heritage hostel that is set in an old two-storey shop house (with a rather colourful history to boot)! With 80’s era music playing over the speakers, the cafe exudes a nostalgic, old school vibe that is further complimented by the simple decor and the abundance of greenery that dot the interior .
