Jewel Changi Airport has continued to draw large crowds ever since it opened in April 2019, and we can definitely see why! Between the sheer number of shops, attractions, and of course restaurants and eateries across its multiple floors, it’s on its way to becoming another defining Singaporean landmark on its own.

Whether you’re a local making a trip there to check out what the fuss is about or a traveller who’s eager to see Jewel’s sights before your next flight, we’re sure that this is one of the questions that will be on your mind: just what can I eat there? 
As it’s been almost 3 months since Jewel opened, we decided to check whether the restaurants there have begun applying for their halal certification so that you can dine there without any worries! 
Disclaimer: Our editorial team called MUIS directly on 4 Jun 2019 to confirm the halal status of these establishments. We will be updating them as we get more information. Several of the eateries below are from larger chains (e.g. KFC, Subway) whose other outlets have all received halal certification. MUIS has clarified with us that while the ingredients used might be halal-certified, a certificate may not be issued for the entire eatery yet as the kitchen and food preparation areas will still need to be inspected. MUIS’ official advice is that it’s best to wait for the certificate to be issued as it means that all parts of the establishment would be up to their standards.
1. A&W
A&W has had one of the most anticipated reopenings in Singapore yet, with long queues up till today and even at odd hours of the night! While we were told by the A&W PR team at the time of Jewel’s opening that they are intending to pursue halal certification and are using halal-certified ingredients, their application is still pending as of right now. Looks like we’ll have to wait for a little longer (or head over to Malaysia or Indonesia!) to eat their famous American diner-style hotdogs, burgers, and waffles.

2. Burger King

Burger King is famous for its juicy burgers stacked tall with scrumptious patties and flavourful condiments, as well as their crispy onion rings. 
Apart from these classic options, they’ve even started selling locally-flavoured treats such as Teh Tarik Pie and Mala Stacker Burgers too!

3. Commons

Those who stay in Tampines might be more familiar with Commonground, which was this eatery’s name when it first opened at Our Tampines Hub. Even after their name change, Commons still brings you a classic and extensive menu full of delicious Western-style selections. Make sure to try their Gambaretti Spaghetti which comes with juicy tiger prawns, split the Commons Meat Platter Hero with your family or friends, and end your meal with their Dark Chocolate Brownie Ganache Tart!

4. Earle Swensen’s

What sets this restaurant apart is its iconic buffet salad bar, with over 25 different salads, greens, and fruits available at one time. You’ll definitely need a side salad to balance out their generous entrees, including Charbroiled Ribeye Steak, Charbroiled Sirloin Steak, and Earle’s Surf & Turf that combines Wagyu steak with fresh lobster!

5. El Fuego by Collin’s

The Collin’s group operates several Western-style eateries in Singapore, and El Fuego is one of their few halal-certified establishments. 
This eatery serves contemporary European dishes including Wagyu Bavette Steak, live Boston Lobster, and even Hokkaido Scallop Ceviche. Read more about what you can treat yourself to here!

6. Hawker

You can’t visit Singapore without trying some iconic local dishes, and Hawker gives you the chance to do just that with a little twist! Their signature Chilli Crab Bao Burger transforms the classic Singaporean dish into a chunky crab patty slathered with chilli crab sauce and sandwiched between crispy fried mantou. Other local favourites on the menu include the Nasi Lemak Burger and Chicken Rice Burger!

7. Jinjja Chicken

Some may doubt that the K-wave is still going strong in Singapore, but Jinjja Chicken’s popularity proves otherwise! Though their outlet at Jewel Changi is still undergoing inspection and has not received the formal certification yet, fans of their Korean Fried Chicken, Jjajangmyeon (Korean black bean noodles), and Jjamppong (Korean seafood soup noodles) can rejoice at having more choices at the airport!

8. KFC

Sometimes there’s truly nothing more satisfying than biting down into a piece of crispy, juicy fried chicken. While the Jewel Changi outlet is still pending its formal certification, fans of KFC’s Original and Crispy fried chicken can look forward to having this familiar taste when they’re at the airport. Plus the outlet is open from 7am onwards – who’s up for a bowl of KFC’s breakfast porridge before a morning flight?

9. Old Chang Kee

10. Saap Saap Thai

Craving for some Thai street food? Saap Saap Thai’s signature Beef Boat Noodles, Grilled Chicken Noodles, and of course Thai Iced Milk Tea will hit the spot! 
Here’s where you can sink your teeth into some affordable dishes that’ll make you wish you’d booked a trip to Bangkok. Best of all, their Jewel Changi outlet has a view of the indoor waterfall feature that’ll level up your simple meal into a visual feast!

11. Sama Sama by Tok Tok

Try finding Indonesian food in Singapore and you’ll most likely end up with ayam penyet or nasi goreng – but Sama Sama aims to change that by bringing Indonesian soup dishes and street snacks into the spotlight! Here’s where you can get Jakarta-style Lontong Sayur Betawi topped with stewed beef, jumbo prawns, and crispy crackers, or Sup Buntut full of tenderly cooked oxtail.

12. So Pho

Trying to escape the Singapore heat? Pop by So Pho for some refreshing Vietnamese street food such as Summer Rolls, Mango and Papaya Salad, and Banh Mi baguettes. If you’re in the mood for something a little more savoury, make sure to try their Pho or Glass Noodles!

13. Stuff’d

In just a few years, it’s become so easy to find a Stuff’d outlet around the corner no matter where you are in Singapore. Though the Jewel Changi outlet is still undergoing processing, we’re hopeful that we’ll soon get to dig in to this homegrown favourite soon. Their blend of Mexican-style burritos and quesadillas with Turkish-style kebab and grilled meat truly hits the spot when you’re looking for something hearty and filling. For those who want a lighter option, you can even choose a burrito bowl or tacos instead!

14. Subway
Subway obtained halal certification for their outlets in late 2018, and we’ve never been more grateful to have even more options available on the go. Being able to customize your very own sandwich – complete with copious amounts of sauce! – really makes every bite of your meal that much more satisfying. We can’t wait for the outlet at Jewel Changi to formally receive its certificate so that we can chow down before our next flight!

Ambiguous Status
During our initial visit to Jewel Changi Airport, we were also informed that several other eateries (O’tah, Project Pizza by Pezzo, and Sankranti) were intending to undergo halal certification. During our recent follow-up with MUIS on 4 Jul 2019, we were subsequently informed that these eateries had either not submitted an application yet, or were still in the early stages of the process. However, this does not mean that their ingredients are not Muslim-friendly and we encourage readers to check directly with the eateries about whether they are using halal-certified ingredients and use their own discretion.
