NEW: This Is The Salted Egg Indomie That Everyone’s Obsessed About

Remember a few months ago, we introduced you to the Indomie Onigiri in Indonesia which went absolutely viral?

Now just when you thought it can’t get any better, Indomie has just launched a new flavour – Salted Egg!

Credit: Giphy

Yes folks, Indomie Salted Egg is all the craze in Indonesia now. And we can totally see why! It’s hard to resist anything salted egg and with the springy texture of Indomie, we’re pretty sure it tastes exceptional too 🤤

Credit: @umamicouple on Instagram

There have been so many rave reviews on social media with some saying that the salted egg noodles is creamy and on point. The texture of the Indomie also pairs well with the salted egg.

Credit: @agatayashinta on Instagram

It also seems like this one has a bigger portion than the original Indomie, so that’s definitely a plus point! But there are some reviews saying they wished the salted egg taste was stronger while others said they preferred the original Indomie. Well, there’s only one way to find out – by trying it out yourself ☺️

Credit: @fan1388 on Instagram

Unfortunately, it’s only available in Indonesia now under Indomie’s premium collection so if you’re in Indonesia or heading there anytime soon, you should totally stock up on it. Better still, if you have friends heading there, get them to bring it back for you 😜Alternatively, if you’re in Singapore, you can get it online on Airfrov – a website where you can ask travellers to bring back items for you.

So, if you’re a salted egg AND Indomie lover, why not give this a try and let us know how it’s like? 😋

JUST IN: Subway Singapore Is Officially Halal-Certified

It’s official.

Subway Singapore is finally halal-certified!

Credit: giphy

Yes, we know you’re probably screaming and crying tears of joy now, because we sure are 😂 The moment we’ve all been waiting for is now here. Subway Singapore has announced that it’s officially halal-certified today and halal certificates will be displayed starting tomorrow (1 September 2018).

As part of their halal process, all of Subway’s pork or pork-based products have been replaced with halal chicken and beef ones. One of their sauces, the red wine vinaigrette, has also been taken off the menu.

For the uninitiated, Subway lets you customise your sandwiches by choosing your choice of bread, flavour, cheese and vegetables. To top it off, you can also add your choice of sauces. We had a sample of one of their hot favourites, the Italian BMT, which has beef pepperoni, beef salami and chicken ham. If you’re new to Subway, we highly recommend their Subway Melt and Subway Club too! 😉

And now for the next best part, Subway cookies! If you choose to have your sub as a meal, you can pair it with either two cookies or chips plus a soft drink. Known for being soft and chewy on the inside and crispy on the sides, Subway’s cookies are a must-try 🤗

If you step into one of Subway’s new “Fresh Forward” outlets, you’d also notice a freestyle drinks machine, where you’ll be able to customise your own soft drinks too – whether you want it low-calorie, caffeine-free or fruit-flavoured. We really loved that there were dozens of flavours to choose from ☺️

We also had a little chat with Subway’s country director for Southeast Asia and he told us that being halal allows Subway to be more inclusive and share the joy of their yummy sub sandwiches to a larger market.

Credit: @greatworldcitysg on Instagram

We applaud Subway for having taken this big leap and here’s hoping this would encourage more eateries to do the same too!

But for now, let’s just sink our teeth in Subway’s mouth-watering sandwiches, shall we? 😉

Note: All of the Subway outlets in Singapore are halal except the one at Wisteria Mall which is still in the application process.

8 Essential Hacks To Up Your Instagram Stories

$

0

Ever looked at your friends’ Instagram stories and wondered why theirs look so much more creative than yours? Or asked yourself, “Why doesn’t it seem like my app has the same functions?!” 🤔

Credit: giphy

Well, we’ve got just the guide for you to post IG stories like never before. From third-party apps to hidden IG functions, here are all the things you probably never knew you could do on Instagram! 🤗

1. Customize the fonts and colours of your text

You may not know this but your text comes with a gradient of colours beyond the ones you see on display! Simply tap and hold the colour palette for the range of colours to expand, drag over to your desired colour and voila – your text is coloured to your liking.

Another way to diversify your fonts is by manually creating a ‘shadow’ effect. All you have to do is copy and paste your text in a different colour on top of the original one!

Perhaps the same old fonts just won’t do anymore. No fret – in such cases, third-party apps such as HypeType have got you covered 😉

#HHWT Tip: If you’re using the free HypeType version and find the watermark unsightly, you can cover it with emojis, gifs or better still, a sticker of your face!

Download:
HypeType: iOS | Google Play

P.S. Check out these other apps you MUST download to edit your travel photography on the go!

2. Use a variety of shooting techniques

Panning isn’t the only way to shoot when it comes to videos on your IG stories! Frame after frame of panning shots might also lose your followers’ attention. Instead, use iMovie to create various effects such as slowing down / speeding up your video! Or you can take several pictures and combine them into one stop-motion video for a more creative twist.

(However, as iMovie is only exclusive to Apple users, we highly recommend VivaVideo for you Android fans instead! 😉)

Tired of Boomerang? You can use the features inside your iPhone’s Photos app! Firstly, ensure you’re taking photos with the ‘Live’ function switched on. Next, open the photo on your gallery. Swipe up the picture and turn it into a Loop or Bounce!

Here’s the best part – you can instantly turn your Live photo into a boomerang on IG story! All you have to do is press and hold the photo until it turns from ‘Normal’ to ‘Boomerang’! Who would’ve thought such a function existed? 😱

If you’d like to turn its Loop or Bounce version into a video for your IG story, use the Lively app and save as video. (You can also turn yourself into a gif with this app!)

#HHWT Tip: Jump shots look way more epic when you record them in slow motion with your iPhone camera! You can adjust the parts you’d like to slow down using the ‘edit’ function.

Download:
iMovie: iOS
VivaVideo: Google Play
Lively: iOS

3. Turn your IG story into an aesthetic photo essay

If you’re an avid follower of influencers, you probably noticed templates like these being used often.

Well, they’re created with an app called Unfold, which has been all the hype these recent days! Unfold provides various frames to make your stories look clean and professional, allowing you to channel your inner photographer by making aesthetic photo essays.

But if you’re more of a colourful person, don’t worry! You can add colours to the background of these templates to create more lively stories.

#HHWT Tip: Don’t forget to play with their variety of fonts! Use different ones for headings and body texts so your text-laden IG stories are easier on the eye.

Download:
Unfold: iOS | Google Play

4. Combine your photos and videos in one frame

Ditch the conventional postings and take it to the next level by combining both your photos and videos into one frame!

The Unfold app allows you to do that in not just one template, but in all of the templates provided. However, do be wary that black borders are created around your video if it does not fill the designated space.

This method also allows you to give your followers a further look into what goes on in an otherwise still picture 😍

5. Use the pen tool as borders, frames and more!

Don’t have enough storage for all those third-party apps? We’ve got just the solution for you!

The pen tool is such a versatile IG story function that you can use it to create borders, frames and fancy little decorations for your story!

One method I found really interesting is to scrawl across a photo and erase parts which I wish to show. This makes the photo look so much more lively and artsy!

#HHWT Tip: You can also choose your ink from a gradient of colours! Just follow the steps in hack no. 1 and you’re all set.

6. Liven up your story with GIFs!

Ever since Instagram introduced a multitude of new functions, the GIF one has been used a lot – but it never loses its flavour! Beyond adding humour, GIFs can also be used to enliven your story or emphasize your story of the day.

Search for a word/emotion and you’re most likely to find a variety to match what you’re looking for!

#HHWT Tip: You can tap on your GIF to switch its orientation.

7. Beautify your landscape videos with InShot

Tired of the ugly gradient background Instagram provides for your landscape pictures and videos?

InShot is the perfect app to turn your landscape content into portraits that are much more aesthetically pleasing on Instagram story! Add a colour, some text and stickers to give it your own flair.

Download
Inshot: iOS | Google Play

8. Schedule your stories ahead of time

If you’re on holiday, chances are you don’t have the luxury of time to sit down and launch into creative mode as you’re posting your IG stories. And by the time you’re ready to post, it might feel undesirable to spam your followers with so many frames at once!

Your solution lies in this one amazing app – Preview. Schedule your IG stories with time apart from each frame so it doesn’t seem like you’re dumping an entire days’ worth of activities in one shot!

You can also preview the appearance of your IG stories and ensure everything looks fine and dandy before you post your IG story. 😉

Download:
Preview: iOS | Google Play

Now that you know of these 8 different ways you can up your IG story game, it’s time to start getting creative and let your friends in on this creative side of Instagram. Did we miss out any hacks you have up your sleeves? Feel free to share them with us in the comments section! We’d love to know more 🤗

Have you watched Crazy Rich Asians? 😍 You must be wondering about the filming locations at the back of your mind while watching the movie (I know I did! 😆).

Credit: Giphy

Fret not, we went into full-on Sherlock Holmes mode and identified 8 filming locations in Singapore and Malaysia! And the best part is: these places are situated near halal food. Now isn’t that something you love to hear? 😉

Singapore
1) Newton Food Centre

Credit: @esteban_the_explorer on Instagram

As many of us know, hawker centres have evolved to become an integral part of Singapore’s culture, and Crazy Rich Asians portrayed it right. That was the first thing the main protagonists Nick Young and Rachel did on their first night in Singapore.

Credit: Giphy

Looks like they may have gone to the one true place that Singaporeans love – Newton Food Centre! This hawker centre has been around since the 1970s and it’s also the author Kevin Kwan’s favourite place.

Halal Food Nearby:

Newton is no stranger to halal food as well. You’ll find a couple of halal-certified stalls that can satisfy your hungry tummies like:

Jian Fa Seafood BBQ

The one and only thing you need to savour here is the Singapore’s signature dish – Chilli Crab and you can find a halal one at Jian Fa Seafood BBQ! It’s the perfect place if you’re coming with your families and groups to dine zi char style.

Credit: Jian Fa Seafood BBQ on Facebook

Among their specialties is their flame-grilled cheesy King Prawns, which is perfect for a group feast. Other specials you cannot miss out on are their Prawn Paste Chicken and Cereal Prawns.

Credit: @opiewaan on Instagram

#HHWT Tip: We recommend heading to Stall No. 43 and for other alternatives, you may head over to Pirate’s Seafood (Stall No. 56) or Takara Grilled Seafood (Stall No. 74)! These three stalls are all halal-certified.

2) Gardens By The Bay

Another prominent landmark that can be found in the film is the spectacular Gardens By The Bay. If you can’t recall, the Supertree Grove is the place where two of the main characters’ friends, Colin Khoo and Araminta Lee had their wedding reception.

Credit: Giphy

The entire setting is adorned with glamorous Oriental theme with fireworks and beautiful lights – it’s not hard to fall in love with that particular scene 😉

Credit: Alexander Waltner on Flickr

#HHWT Tip: Admission to Supertree Grove is free but admission charge to OCBC Skyway applies. If you want to check out the light and music show, it happens every evening so plan wisely!

Halal Food Nearby:
Texas Chicken

After all that stroll around the gorgeous oasis, head over to Supertree Dining and halal fast food awaits! You can never go wrong with Texas Chicken – the crispy, succulent chickens are to die for.

Finish your meal with one (or two!) of its delicious Honey Butter Biscuits!

#HHWT Tip: You can also find McDonald’s around the premise, so if you’re not into chicken, you can always go for the classic burgers at McDonald’s. After all, who can ever resist this popular fast food chain? 😉

Sri Geylang Sate @ Satay By The Bay

You might need to walk a little bit to get here but we can assure that it’s all worth it! Situated inside a food court nearby Gardens By The Bay, Satay By The Bay houses several popular satay stalls like Sri Geylang Sate.

Credit: Nina Natalie on Facebook

This Muslim-owned stall serves some of the best beef and mutton satays in town! Top the satays with the traditional peanut sauce, and you’re in for a good meal.

Address: 18 Marina Gardens Drive, #01-19, Singapore 018953

Opening Hours: Daily, 11:00am – 1:00am.

3) Merlion Park

We have to admit that we almost missed this place! This iconic landmark made its debut in the movie where Nick and Rachel were having a conversation about their relationship!

Fun fact about this place: it symbolises Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village when it was called Temasek. The lion head represents Singapore’s original name – Singapura or the ‘lion city’ in Old Javanese. Introduced by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in the 70s, this icon has been welcoming visitors from all over the world.

Halal Food Nearby:
Aqua Marine

If you’re around the area and able to stretch lunchtime a bit longer (perhaps on Fridays), make a trip to Marina Square and have a buffet lunch! AquaMarine boasts a vast selection of Asian and international cuisines, with a specialty in serving a wide variety of juicy fresh seafood like crabs, mussels, clams and prawns. Seafood lovers, dig in!

Credit: Marina Mandarin Singapore on Facebook

Besides the seafood galore, you can also feast on top-notch Asian must-haves like Hainanese chicken rice, lobster laksa and of course, desserts. For a slightly hefty price tag, make sure you come with empty stomachs at this lavish buffet so that you can eat to your heart’s content.

This 130-year-old hotel is also conveniently located next to Bugis, an area that houses a large Malay Muslim community, hence you’ll find plenty of halal food around.

Halal Food Nearby:
Krave

Nestled in the line of shops along Bali Lane, Krave is a famous café offering a fusion menu of Malay-Western food and desserts. Located just a walking distance away from Bugis MRT station, this ambient café has both alfresco and indoor dining for a scrumptious meal.

If you’ve read the book, you may have remembered that the wedding of Colin and Araminta occurred at the fictional Methodist Church, but the one in the film took place at Chijmes (pronounced as ‘chimes’).

The 19th-century former chapel was converted into a Catholic girls’ school for many years until 2004 where Chijmes became an event space for many occasions. While there is no halal food in the building, there’s a few that you can find just around the block.

Located along Prinsep Street (11-minutes away from Chijmes by foot), the family-run restaurant is widely known for serving its’ famous steamed chicken – with a halal twist! Another variation of what we’d basically call Singapore’s national dish, the Hainanese Chicken Rice is a plateful of fragrant rice with slices of ever so tender, moist chicken breast.

7) Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

The mahjong scene between Eleanor Young and Rachel was shot right at this heritage site. Believe it or not, it’s actually in Penang, Malaysia! Known as Blue Mansion by the locals, this mansion belonged to Cheong Fatt Tze, a Chinese merchant who aspired to preserve his heritage and share his love of culture and tradition through architecture.

At the height of its glory, this mansion was the pivotal heart of the city. However, it fell into disrepair. Thanks to a group of conservationists, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion was restored and eventually earned the prestigious UNESCO Heritage 2000 Award. Today, the mansion is now a museum and a boutique hotel in Georgetown where some of the best halal food can be found.

Is there anything more exciting than playing with cats? Lovable and adorable, we wish there are more hours in the day to spend quality time with our furry friends. As cat lovers ourselves, we love travelling to new places and discovering more cat-friendly cities to visit 😻

Credit: giphy

If we could, we would snuggle every cat in the world. To live out this impossible dream, here are 9 Muslim-friendly places in the world you should visit if you’re a cat lover!

1. Houtong Cat Village, Taiwan

There’s a purr-fect paradise in Taiwan where you can find cats lounging away in the midst of nature. That place is called Houtong Cat Village and it’s situated along the calm Keelung River. Here, you can spot a friendly tabby cat walking down the sidewalk or a shy tortoiseshell feline resting on the bench 😅

Credit: @sweet_dal_dabang on Instagram

Currently, this charming local village has over 200 cat residents, which makes it a lovely sightseeing spot for cat lovers. Remember to swing by the little cafes and souvenir shops to complete your experience. You can pick up cat-themed notepads, fridge magnets, and purses too!

Credit: @sweet_dal_dabang on Instagram

#HHWT Tip: After you’re done admiring the cats at Houtong, head back to Taipei for a gastronomic feast! Our list of Muslim-friendly eateries in Taipei will be just what you need.

Address: Houtong Cat Village, 224 Fengjia Road, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

2. Aoshima Cat Island, Japan

When visitors step foot onto Aoshima Cat Island, they will be greeted by a clowder of cats. Situated in the Ehime Prefecture, the cats were originally bred to manage the rodent issues faced by the local fishermen. Eventually, the cats made Aoshima Island their home, and their population grew. Aren’t we glad that happened?!

Credit: @whiskersitters on Instagram

The island has less than 20 residents, but there are reportedly 120 cats living on the island today. While the cat population has attracted tourists far and wide, the island is still a residential home for the locals there. So it’s best to respect their privacy when you’re exploring the island!

Credit: @cdpoole on Instagram

#HHWT Tip: There are only two rounds of ferry rides to the island. First, purchase your tickets at the Aoshima boarding area at Iyo-Nagahama station. Then, enjoy a 35-minute ferry ride to Aoshima Island 🤗

Address: Aoshima Cat Island, 799-3470 Ehime-ken, Ozu-shi, Nagahamacho, Aoshima, Japan

3. Kalkan, Turkey

Kalkan is a charming beach town for cat lovers who are looking for a tan. Sprawled with beaches, great architecture and historical sites, the town is a tourist attraction of its own. However, the cats in Kalkan are popular for being stealing the limelight 😹 After all, they’re all adorable and waiting to be loved!

Credit: @manzaradelissi on Instagram

Cats roam the streets and alleyways like they own this town, so you’ll stumble upon them when you explore Kalkan on foot. Sometimes, you’ll find them appreciating the afternoon sun on the bench or minding their own business in the town’s centre. Remember to thank the volunteers when you see them! They’re doing a great job in neutering these felines and feeding them during winter.

Address: Kalkan, 07580 Kas/Antalya, Turkey

4. Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, London

How many feline friends can Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium fit in their two-storey cafe? Well, make that 14 cats! Known as UK’s first cat cafe, they provide a cosy space for visitors to play and cuddle with new furry friends as well as sampling their coffees and cakes.

With these friendly cats roaming around, try to spot all of them! Look out for their oldest cat Mue who doesn’t love pats but enjoys a good fuss. Then, say hello to the very clumsy Carbonelle or the lazy Wookie. Also, did you know that only the luckiest visitor gets a cat cuddle from Wendy?😉

Credit: @ladydinahscats on Instagram

#HHWT Tip: As this is a cafe, the menu is unfortunately not halal. But, you can always swing by for a cup of tea or coffee 😉 And if you feel like having afternoon tea elsewhere, these Muslim-friendly bakeries would be perfect!

Address: Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, 152-154, Bethnal Green Road, London, United Kingdom.

6. Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, Rome

Situated in Rome, the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary comes with a very fascinating story. Many centuries ago, the Largo di Torre Argentina (known simply as Torre Argentina) was a public square that consists of Roman Republican temples and the Pompey’s Theatre. It wasn’t known to the public until it was excavated in 1929. Over time, stray and abandoned cats populated this place as their personal shelter!

When founders Silvia Viviani and the late Lia Dequel needed a perfect place to establish a cat sanctuary, the Torre Argentina immediately came to mind. Today, the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary is home to 150 adorable cats and cared for by volunteers every day 😺

7. The Cat Boat, Amsterdam

Also known as De Poezenboot, you can find this Cat Boat floating on a serene canal in Amsterdam. Founded by the late Henriette van Weelde, the cat sanctuary was originally housed in her home before she ran out of space. Then, she turned one of the houseboats along the canal into the famous Cat Boat.

Thanks to streams of donations from visitors, The Cat Boat is still up and running today. Currently, it serves as a home for 50 cats that are waiting to be adopted and cared for by new families. The sanctuary also opens their doors to visitors and everyone is welcome to pat the kitties 😻

P.S. Don’t travel around Amsterdam without savouring their Muslim-friendly street food!

Address: De Poezenboot, Singel 38G, 1015 Amsterdam, Netherlands

8. Tashirojima, Japan

If you’re vacationing closer to the Miyagi Prefecture in Japan, it’ll be a shame to skip a day trip to Tashirojima Island. Why, you ask? Well, these lovable cats are waiting for your high-pitched coos and soft pats. At the moment, there are over 100 cats on the island to keep you busy 😱

Credit: @visiontravelyyc on Instagram

When the cats were first brought to the island, the residents were trying their best to manage the influx of mice from silkworm farming. So thanks to these hard-working cats, the mice population on the island is now under control!

Credit: @alraisi89 on Twitter

#HHWT Tip: Depending on the season, there are two to three ferry rides to the island. To visit the island, take the 40-minute Ajishimaline cruise from the Ishinomaki Port (accessible via a bus ride from JR Ishinomaki station). Then, hop off at the Nitoda Port of Tashirojima.

Address: Tashirojima (Cat Island), Uchiyama-88 Tashirohama, Ishinomaki-shi, Miyagi-ken 986-0023, Japan.

Additionally, Safeture is a global warning system that gives users up-to-date information on safety, weather and general things to be cautious of while in that particular destination. As soon as you arrive at your destination, current safety-related news like natural disasters, civil unrest, epidemic outbreaks, terrorism and traffic incidents occurring in the country can all be delivered quickly so that you would know where to avoid and what to do!

How convenient is that?😉 All you have to do is create your own trip on the app, save places of interest and bring your itinerary along with you. It’s that simple!

This restroom-searching app is loaded with more than 100,000 public restrooms and can pinpoint the nearest one to your location. Each bathroom comes with a rating – “Sit” if it is clean, or “Squat” if it’s not. Users can rate toilets and add new ones to the app!

Credit: Sit or Squat Restroom Finder

You can search by location, rating, whether they have a changing table, or whether they’re free to use (as opposed to a coffee shop where you might be expected to buy a cup). For a Muslimah, these ratings are useful in determining the restroom’s suitability for taking ablution before prayers. You definitely do not want a Squat-rated toilet for this 😉

General Travel Apps

8. PackPoint

Before all the fun of travelling kicks in, there’s something many people do not look forward to – packing😫 It is certainly not the most glamorous chore, but a well-packed bag could prepare you for some unexpected scenarios, especially as a Muslimah on the go!

Credit: @fromannettewithlove on Instagram

This travel app creates custom packing lists based on your gender and travel details such as destination, length and type (business or leisure). On top of its primary function as a map, CityMaps2Go offers a range of services that can work completely offline as well so you can use it any time on the go. 10. Local taxi/ride-hailing apps

Some countries are blessed with extensive subway lines and bus routes that can get you anywhere efficiently – time and money wise. But if planning your trip via public transport is too daunting, or if your feet needs some pampering after a day of walking, private transport is probably your next best bet!

Credit: Lyft

In such situations, local taxi apps will guarantee you a ride in case you’re stuck in low traffic location with barely any cars passing by. Alternatively, make use of ride-hailing services like Uber, Grab and Lyft that operates in numerous cities and countries!

11. Detour

One of the perks of being a lone traveller is travelling according to your own schedule. And a great way to utilise your alone time while still uncovering local gems would be to go on walking tours with the help of Detour! This is the best way to save money while still learning, and fully exploring a destination😍

Detour is an audio app that offers walking tours in selected cities that are written and narrated by local residents. These walking tours are often narrated by those either at the centre of the story, or with an expert bent on the subject. For instance, in San Francisco, Detour offers a tour of Fisherman’s Wharf given by an actual fisherman. You see his boat and where he brings in crab each day and learn about the working side of the Wharf. A rather novel and special experience we’d say!

Paris: 9 Expectations VS Reality

$
0

For some people, Paris is more than just a bucket list destination. Just hearing someone utter the word ‘Paris’ can have them go all starry-eyed; their mind’s eye conjuring up visions of the Eiffel tower, going on strolls down the Champs-Élysées or enjoying delicious pastries and espressos in a chic cafe on rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis 😍. Plus, there’s also all those clichés about Paris being the city of lights and love; so of course, it makes sense that everything about the city should be magical and romantic, right? 🤔

Well I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but sometimes reality can be really different from what we imagine. So, if you’re planning a trip to Paris, here is a list of expectations VS realities about visiting the city of lights that no one bothers to warns you about.

1. Expectations: The Eiffel Tower is the main attraction

Credit: Nilesh Khadse on Flickr

When you think of Paris, the first thing that comes to mind is no doubt, the famous Eiffel Tower. Known worldwide as the symbol for all things ‘France’; many poets, painters, singers, photographers and film directors have paid homage to the incredible ‘Iron Lady’. But of course, when in Paris, you’d be remised if you skipped out on seeing the tower, along with some of the other big attractions. Check out our list of famous attractions you shouldn’t miss out on in Paris! 😍

Reality: Plenty of cool and surprisingly beautiful places

Credit: @chloemercr on Instagram

There are plenty of interesting places and sceneries that you can come across while navigating through the streets of Paris. Best of all, if you opt to visit some of the more underrated places, you’ll be able to get some stunning pictures without having to worry about meeting another group of tourists! 👍

Credit: @arsenyl on Instagram

Some of these places include the Palaise de Tokyo, the picturesque neighbourhood of La Campagne à Paris (translated roughly as the Countryside in Paris) and for those of you who appreciate seeing something a little more edgy, there is La Petite Ceinture; an old abandoned Parisian railway that has been completely covered in colourful graffiti and transformed into an urban-nature haven.

2. Expectations: Anything worth doing in Paris is SUPER expensive

Credit: @danceroo on Instagram

The city of lights is famous for its world-renowned attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe and of course the lovely Champs-Élysées that is lined with luxury brand stores; some of which include Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes and Lacoste.

Credit: @ilyanafarha on Instagram

Now some of these attractions may require you to pay an entrance fee/purchase a ticket (like going on top of the Eiffel tower or the roof of the Arc de Triomphe) and let’s be honest, going on a shopping spree is BOUND to happen when you’re in Paris 💸.

Reality: Plenty of attractions you can enjoy for free

Credit: @hilaryrobertson on Instagram

But be that as it may, you’ll be happy to know that a trip to Paris doesn’t necessarily have to break the bank! There are plenty of other things that you can do in the city that is absolutely free! Some of them include going on a free walking tour to explore Paris and get the lay of the land, attending a free fashion show at the stunning Galeries Lafayette or even stopping by the Atelier Brancusi at Centre Pompidou to check out some of the Romanian-born sculptors’ impressive works 👨🎨.

For more things to do, why not check out our article on things to do in Paris that are absolutely free!!

3. Expectations: Paris is an ultra-clean city

Credit: @marianamcdonald on Instagram

Paris is one of those big cities that has had a lot of limelight in the media ✨. You’ve seen it portrayed in movies, in books, in cartoons and even in comics. It’s always depicted as being a gorgeous and dazzling place, with pristine buildings and an air of mystic and sophistication. With all that in mind, it’s not too far a stretch to assume that the city goes above and beyond to keep their streets clean.

Reality: Paris is in fact, quite dirty

Credits: @parisisugly on Instagram

When you’re finally in Paris, don’t be too surprised to find that the place is actually both dirty and rather smelly 😣. In some parts of the city, people treat the streets as if it is their own personal ashtray. There are cigarette butts littered everywhere on the streets, dotting the pavement like too many sprinkles and worst of all (in my honest opinion), the people here don’t seem too keen to pick up after their dogs because if you’re walking down the street, chances are you’ll encounter a mound of dog poop every few hundred metres 😩.

But fortunately, the city is trying its best to curb the problem by enforcing stricter rules and fines for people who are caught not picking up after their animals and for littering.

4. Expectations: Getting around in Paris is overly complicated

Credits: @wheremagazine on Instagram

With over 20 districts and several streets that share very similar names (which are pretty impossible to pronounce if you’re not a native speaker, I might add), getting lost in Paris seems like the inevitable; especially if it’s your first time visiting 😕! The city can seem like a veritable maze and you don’t want to find yourself in a dodgy area by accident.

Reality: Getting around on public transport is actually really easy

While it might be tempting to just hail a cab and simply tell them where you want to go, the cab fare is going to be pretty high so you’re better off taking other means of public transport like the bus or the metro 🚇.

Credits: @theatresets on Instagram

The good news is, the public transport network in Paris is very well connected and even if you do get lost walking around topside, you’ll eventually find a metro sign. Rest assured that as long as you know your destination, getting around with public transportation is easy regardless of the language you speak.

Credits: @the_fervent_traveller on Instagram

Be warned though, that the metro can be super packed at times (and unfortunately rumours are indeed true: it does smell overwhelmingly like pee!). Also make sure to be wary of pickpockets!

5. Expectations: Paris is a romantic city

Credits: Lovely Couple Pic on Facebook

When you think of Romance and Paris, the idea seems to go hand in hand, much like cafes and croissants or roses and chocolates. There’s just something about the beauty and grandeur of the French capital that seems to draw people in and it also tends to bring out the romantics in people 💑.

Or at least that’s what Hollywood has been trying to feed us with its (often times) rosy and glamourous depictions of the bustling city (See: Funny Face or An American in Paris).

Reality: Paris isn’t as romantic as you would expect

Credits: Guilhem Vellut on Flickr

While I won’t completely write off this expectation as a total lie, let me give you a solid reason why Paris really isn’t all that romantic. Paris is a city that you have to share with other people; in other words, it’s always super crowded! Just imagine, you’re walking along the street, trying to take in the sights and maybe take one of those cheesy romantic pictures you always see in the movies or on Instagram. Chances are, there are a lot of other people around you who are doing the exact same thing 😅.

Credits: JamesTheShiny on Flickr

Additionally, once you get to the popular tourists stops like the Sacré-Cœur or the Eiffel tower, there will be people around the area who are begging for money or selling trinkets. It kindda ruins the romantic atmosphere, especially when some of them are very persistent about selling you their stuff; even going so far as putting jewellery on you to make you buy them 😒.

6. Expectations: Not knowing any French is going to be a problem

Credit: Giphy

The first time I said I was going to Paris, I got a lot of comments like; “Better brush up on your French!”, “Don’t speak English! The French hate English!” or even “Make sure to download an English to French translator!” 😵

It seemed that nearly everyone I knew was convinced that the French people did not know or speak the English language and that they also looked down on those who DID speak English. Granted that it was my first trip to Paris, I was understandably a little apprehensive…

Reality: The French DO speak English

Credit: Giphy

Turns out, I was worried for nothing. While they’re not particularly fond of speaking the English language, most Parisian do understand and know how to speak it. The thing is, they might not be wholly fluent (and sometimes it can make them feel a bit uncomfortable when they’re speaking to you), but they do try their best to communicate with you should you have any questions!

But since you ARE in Paris, the French people do kind of expect you to at least try and speak a bit of French, even if it’s just a few simple words like ‘Bonjour’, ‘Pardon’ and ‘Merci’ 👌.

7. Expectations: French people are rude and unfriendly

Credits: @mylittlebench on Instagram

This might not come off as much of a surprise for most of you, but one of the most googled things about French people of all time is ‘Why are the French so rude?’

Credit: Giphy

Additionally, there are also travel websites that have ranked Paris as one of the rudest tourist destinations on earth and even online forums like Trip Advisor are filled with people complaining about ‘French rudeness’ and the lack of customer service 😲

Reality: It might be a cultural misunderstanding

Credits: @ europaphotogenica on Instagram

In reality, the French are actually very polite and kind and a lot of the things that they do that tourists label as ‘French rudeness’ can actually be chalked under cultural misunderstandings. French people in general value their privacy so if they act with a little bit of formality and distance towards you, it’s their way of being respectful. It might come off as being unfriendly or rude, but I assure you, it’s not done with any ill intentions! 🙇

Credits: @cafe_society_sf on Instagram

Additionally, when it comes to the service industry, the French want to be treated with dignity. The old adage of ‘the customer is always right’ does not apply in Paris, so if you’re at a restaurant and you’re trying to rush your waiter, chances are he’s going to make you wait even longer out of spite. But as long as you’re being respectful and practice good etiquette (basically treat your waiter like a human being!), you’ll definitely get a much nicer reception 😉.

8. Expectations: You’ll see a lot of avant-garde fashion on the streets of Paris

Credits: @parisfashionweek on Instagram

Paris is home to some of history’s most celebrated designers and is well known to be one of the four fashion capitals of the world. That being said, when you’re strolling through the Parisian street, you can’t help but let your eyes wander 👀.

For a place recognized as being very fashion forward, you’d expect to see people dressed to the nines in designer brands, vibrant colours, funky patterns, and sporting an outrageously priced accessory or two 👜.

Reality: Daily Parisian fashion is very subtle and chic

Credits: @ootd.pretty on Instagram

Instead of seeing people dressed like they just came off the runway of Paris fashion week, most locals actually opt for outfits that are simple, casual but yet still maintaining that classic look. You won’t see many outrageous outfits or colours (the Parisians tend to stick with a lot of black, grey and navy) but somehow, they still look good. 😎

And if you do spot someone wearing a super avant-garde outfit, chances are that they’re not even Parisian and that they’re just there to have their photos taken.

9. Expectations: Food in Paris is super expensive

Credits: @lesdeuxmargots on Instagram

The French capital is filled with plenty of amazing restaurants manned by talented chefs from all over the world. In recent years, Paris has also seen a revival in its long-established gastronomic landscapes, including traditional bistros, brasseries, and stylish restaurants serving classic French food. 🥐

Of course, when you’re visiting some of these Instagram-worthy cafes, you might notice that the prices for their meals can be a bit… steep. Just imagine walking into a cute little bistro and finding out a can of soda can cost up to 7 Euros, never mind an actual meal themselves!

Reality: Finding halal food in Paris is easier than expected!

Credits: @theranch_baraviandes on Instagram

But, as long as you’re not looking to have a Michelin-star rated meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you won’t have to worry about finding good, cheap, and halal food while in Paris!

Credits: @sadaffitt on Instagram

You can opt for a croissant or a pain au chocolate from a bakery, (they usually don’t cost all that much and the sheer size of it can be quite filling), but if that’s not to your liking, there are also plenty of crepe stands and falafel shops for a cheap, quick and tasty meal!

If you’re not entirely sure just which restaurants to go to for lunch or dinner, we’ve got you covered with a list of must-try Muslim-friendly restaurants or if you prefer to hunt down something sweet, try checking out the french pastries that are a must in Paris! From Halal Raclettes to dainty cream puffs, you definitely won’t be missing out on the vibrant food scene!

Hopefully the list hasn’t totally disillusioned you and put you off Paris for good! Admittedly the city is still undeniably very charming with an interesting history and gorgeous scenery. If you’re planning on going for a visit, rest assured that if you can get past some of the less than movie worthy aspects, you’re going to have a really good time!

Must-visit local markets:

You can’t say you’ve been to Hong Kong without visiting their local markets! Bustling, crowded and loud, street markets are where you can really immerse yourself in the daily lives of the locals. Here are 3 markets you cannot miss while in Hong Kong:

1. Ladies Market

Don’t be mistaken by the name of this market! Though named Ladies Market due to the wide range of clothes and accessories catered to women, this market has an extensive range of other stuff too – including men’s fashion, cheap souvenirs, electronics and toys.

Credit: Clarissa Pomare on Facebook

Though the market opens around 12pm, the activity only builds up later in the afternoon and continues all the way till 11pm. It gets really crowded on the weekends so do plan your time wisely!

#HHWT Tip: It’s no surprise that Ladies Market is a tad touristy and starting prices might be a little higher than the actual price, but just remember to bargain your way through. After all, that’s the fun in shopping, right?

Address: Tung Choi St, Mong Kok, Kowloon

Directions: Take exit E2 from MTR Mong Kok Station and walk down Nelson St till you reach the market

2. Temple Street Night Market

For a more traditional atmosphere of a Chinese market, head over to Temple Street Night Market in Jordan, where you’ll get a glimpse of authentic Hong Kong culture. As the largest and liveliest market in Hong Kong, you can just imagine the wide variety of things sold at this market. Some of the items offered here can also be found at Ladies Market, such as affordable clothes and accessories. But what makes Temple Street stand out are their antique wares, trinkets, jade and other vintage Chinese souvenirs.

What’s more, the market is also alive with Chinese culture such as fortune-tellers and open-air Cantonese opera. It’s also interesting to witness the theatrics and festivities of a Chinese market! Though Temple Street Night Market opens at 6pm, the market is at its liveliest from 7pm – 10pm.

Address: Temple St, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon

Directions: Take exit C from MTR Yau Ma Tei Station or exit A from MTR Jordan Station

3. Stanley Market

Get away from the bustling city to this seaside market located in the quaint district of Stanley. With a more chill and laid-back atmosphere, this is a great place to pick up Chinese-themed souvenirs such as ornamental chopsticks, paintings and cards. You can even find Bruce Lee memorabilia here!

Credit: @pamelawong70 on Instagram

Unlike the other two markets, Stanley Market is only opened during the day and it makes for a charming escape away from the city. The best part is, the market is only about 5 to 10 minutes walk to Stanley Beach, so you can unwind there after a stroll through the market.

Address: Stanley New St and Stanley Market Rd, Stanley, Hong Kong Island

Opening hours: 10.30am – 6.30pm daily

Directions: Take bus 6, 6A, 6X, or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus (across Star Ferry Pier in Central)

All-in-one shopping:

Not only is Hong Kong filled with interesting street markets, the city also has a wide array of shopping malls which has everything you could possibly need under one roof! Most of the malls in Hong Kong have options to suit any budget. Not to mention that Hong Kong malls are also perfect for families, especially those with young kids.

4. Harbour City

With more than 700 stores in place, you’ll find a couple of international brands that are only available in Hong Kong like the cosmetics brand Charlotte Tilbury, candy store Sugarfina and many more!

Take your shopping up a notch and head over to the LCX zone for the trendiest fashion labels or SportX zone to browse their sports flagship stores such as FILA. If you want to splurge a little more, there’s also a row of luxury brands at the premise like Hermès and Chanel.

If you’re travelling with kids, this is the best chance to pamper them at Asia’s biggest Toys ‘R’ Us or other shops at the KidX zone. Those of you looking for cosmetics and skincare can go over to the FACES zone which has more than 200 beauty brands!

After you’re done with all that shopping, take a breather at the Ocean Terminal Deck which gives you a magnificent panorama of the Victoria Harbour, perfect for you to soak in Hong Kong’s beautiful skyline.

Address: 3-27 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Opening hours: 10am – 10pm daily

5 Reasons To Dine At This Halal Kobe Beef Restaurant In Japan

$
0
0

Tell anyone you’re travelling to Kobe and the first reaction you’ll probably get is “Kobe beef!”. When I visited Kobe 5 years ago, all I could do was watch longingly as others enjoyed this famous marbled beef. But not anymore. Thanks to Misono Kobe, you can enjoy halal Kobe beef at its place of origin! Trust us, it’ll be one of the most unforgettable meals you’ll ever have.

1. Originator of teppanyaki

One of the best ways to enjoy Kobe beef is teppanyaki, which means grilling on an iron plate. Not only is Misono Kobe the very first restaurant to introduce halal Kobe beef, it’s also the originator of teppanyaki beef steak so you know you’re at the right place 😉 In fact, this restaurant has been serving teppanyaki since 1945! The main store is also the site of the original Misono store, so you’re truly getting the full experience.

Wondering what’s teppanyaki like? Picture this. You’re sitting in front of the iron plate, watching the chef expertly prepare the food and then cook it on the iron plate right in front of you. It’s like watching a graceful performance and an experience not to be missed in Japan!

Our chef was friendly and attentive, answering all our questions and explaining each step along the way – preparation of the vegetables, followed by the highlight of the night, Kobe beef, and finally garlic rice.

There were 5 types of vegetables served and our favourite was the giant sweet, juicy mushroom sourced from the mountainous area in Kobe.

As for the garlic fried rice, it was as life-changing as the Kobe beef. It was fried with beef fat and it smelt so good. In fact, it was so delicious that we ate it on its own.

2. The only restaurant serving prime cuts of halal Kobe beef

We admit, this Kobe beef course isn’t cheap and that’s because Misono Kobe is the only restaurant serving prime cuts of halal Kobe beef. Kobe beef is actually produced from pedigreed Tajima breed cattle, born and slaughtered in Hyogo Prefecture. The meat has to pass a series of strict requirements and only the highest grades of meat with exceptionally high levels of fat marbling earns the Kobe beef label, which is a strictly-guarded trademark. Misono has the halal certificate for each of the Kobe beef cattle. As there are very limited number of halal ones each year (and even fewer premium cuts), this explains the higher price!

Fun fact: We learnt from our chef that contrary to the popular rumor going around, the cows in Hyogo Prefecture are NOT fed with beer nor massaged with sake!

There are 2 courses available – A and B. The price differs due to the cut of the beef, Course A (¥27,000, excluding tax) includes 150g of halal Kobe beef sirloin steak while Course B (¥38,000, excluding tax) includes 150g of Halal Kobe beef fillet steak. It was difficult not to have high expectations but the beef was better than what we imagined.

Well-marbled, tender and flavourful beef served lightly seasoned with pepper and salt. The beef literally melts in your mouth! The chef recommended for it to be prepared medium-rare and he achieved that perfectly.

We might sound like a broken record by now but the food was seriously AMAZING!

Both courses include salad, 5 types of grilled vegetables, garlic rice and melon (sweetest we’ve had in our life!). If you’re dining with your kids, there’s a hamburg steak set (halal Japanese domestic black beef) available at ¥2,000 (excluding tax).

Do note that a reservation is needed at least one day in advance. Drop Misono an email at halal@misono.org with your name, date and time of reservation, number of people, your choice of course (A or B) and preference of hotplate (A or B). Find out more here!

3. Unbeatable location with amazing view

When we travel, that long drive or commute to the restaurant might be inconvenient. Well, the good news is that the Misono main store is conveniently located just a 2-minute walk away from Sannomiya station (Exit 1)!

Alternatively, you can get to the restaurant by from the central gate of the JR Sannomiya station or a 2-minute walk northwards from the west gate of Sannomiya station on Hankyu Railway Kobe line.

You can head straight to the restaurant for a well-deserved meal after some shopping at the shopping street or our favourite Tokyu Hands nearby. The district is also the main business and entertainment area of the city and is well connected on the JR line to Osaka, Kyoto and Himeji.

Oh, did we also mention that the restaurant is located on the 7th floor? This means you get to enjoy the stunning view of the bustling area as you enjoy your meal! The intimate and cosy atmosphere is perfect for celebrations with your family or friends.

4. Other meals available – seafood!

Want to try a variety of food? Misono also serves seafood teppanyaki! You can enjoy abalone, lobster, scallop or seasonal seafood served hot off the grill.

We tried the scallops, lobster and fish, which were all incredibly fresh! Our favourite was the lobster which had a creamy, buttery taste with a hint of smokiness. Do note that the type of seafood is subject to availability and the season.

5. Extra care to look after Muslim guests’ needs

Not only is Misono the very first restaurant in the world to serve halal Kobe beef for Muslim guests, you can also be assured that they pay utmost attention to the way their food is prepared! The restaurant is located on 7th and 8th floor but only the 7th floor has iron plates that are specially reserved for the preparation of halal meals.

Disclaimer: Do note that alcohol is served in the restaurant, we advise that you dine at your own discretion.

While Misono also serves non-halal meat on the 7th floor, you can be sure that they take extra care. For non-halal meat, it’s usually prepared on the grill on the table but the halal meat is prepared on an elevated grill, to ensure that the meat is never mixed. The staff also showed us their kitchen and how their food, cooking utensils and cutlery are all separated in the cabinets.

Of course, if you request, they are also able to show you the halal certificates for the Kobe beef!

If trying Kobe beef isn’t already on your bucket list, we hope you’re now convinced. It’ll definitely be a life-changing meal (and experience!) you’ll never forget!

But what do you do while you roam the piazzas and marvel at the beautiful architectures and statues? Eat gelato, of course! Italy is famous for its gelato not only because gelato is an Italian dessert, but they taste SO good too!

Credit: Giphy

You cannot leave Italy without trying their famous gelatos. Gelato is a type of ice cream that is churned less than regular ice-cream and essentially contains more milk, giving it a richness and density that is distinctively delightful. So delightful that the average ice cream pales in comparison! Excited yet? Within the spacious grounds of the palace, be enchanted by the many pavilions, residences and halls that were formally utilized in the 14th century by the royalty. You’d be blown away by how vastly different Seoul looks from the arches of Gwanghwamun gate! On one side of the gate, skyscrapers tower over the futuristic city that is Seoul but on the other side, beautiful colours of the many old buildings fill the palace grounds.

Get your cameras clicking to the beautiful sights in the palace as you and your girls get transported back in time!

Not to be missed during your visit to the palace is the royal guard-changing ceremony at 10.00am and 2.00pm. The 20-minute ceremony showcases the traditional practice in Korea where the changing of royal guards took place whenever their shifts changed over. These guards played an important role in guarding and patrolling the gates of the palace, and hence had to partake in either the day or night shift in order to protect the royalties who resided in the palace 🤗

#HHWT Tip: To beat the massive crowds at this popular attraction, we recommend coming before the palace opens at 9.00am.
